![]() Keep StatsI keep stats at all times. Actually, I am still helping to develop a number of program that keeps stats the way I would like.![]() If you fail to keep stats, you would be well advised to have a look at Dave's first column Read more on this topic Stats Methodology QuestionI've a specific methodology that I use to gather my golf stats, and I wondered if someone else does something similar.WARNING - geek alert in effect First a concept that's important in what I do - I call it "expected putting" (EP). I've a table that defines how a lot putts I ought to take (on average) to hole out from each distance from 1' to 100'. It's a totally arbitrary judgement on my part of what represents "decent putting". From 1' or 2' - it's 1.0 (do not miss any) From 3' it's 1.1 From 5' it's 1.5 (make half my 5 footers) From 20' it's 2.0 (equal number of 1 putts and 3 putts) From 50' it's 2.25 etc. So if I 2 putt from 50' on a hole this is 0.25 strokes superior than EP. 2 putting from 5' is 0.5 strokes worse than EP, etc. Immediately for the data. I record 2 pieces of info for each shot I make (together with an optional 3rd piece of info). This is how far am I from the hole and the club I'm hitting. A well-played par 4 would read D,7i-149;22,2 First shot was a driver (no distance so pull the distance from the scorecard), a 7i from 149 yards, and 2 putted from 22' (second putt was a 2 footer) Immediately for that same hole played badly D,5i-166-L,SW-25-B;45,4,1 Driver, my second shot had some type of lie problem (the "L"), 3rd shot with a SW from 25 yards in a greenside bunker (the B), and I 3 putted from 45'. I dump all this (in pretty much this exact form) into a MS Access database and derive whatever statistics I wish from this data. I monitor the following data Number of Putts Net Putting against "Expected Putting" Scoring Zone putting - how I putted inside 8' Lag Error on "long" putts 3 Putts Tee to Green (how I would've scored had my putting matched EP) GIR's Driving Distance (determined on holes designated as measureable - flat and straight) Error at Par - how far I'm from the cup in 1 strokes after a par 3, 2 on a par 4, etc Fairways Up/Downs Up/Downs with EP (a chip to 5' is a 50% Up/Down) Birdies and Double Bogeys/worse Birdie Opportunities (birdie putts of 15' or lower) Also I "normalize" a lot of these stats against my average for that stat on a given course. This is long and complicated to explain - and I guess was somewhat complicated to carry out. However it takes nearly no time on the course and not much to time enter after a round, either. Someone else use a similar approach of recording your shots rather than summary data like GIR's, etc? dave Read more on this topic Personal StatsAfter throwing a handful of recent rounds into Digital Divot, it crunched these numbers for me:Handicap Index (8/13/2007): 10.9 (This must be a fluke? I just have 4 18 hole rounds in there so far, and it's recording my lowest just.) Eagles (-2): 1 (0.74%) Birdies (-1): 5 (3.7%) Pars (Even): 40 (29.63%) Bogies (+1): 62 (45.93%) Double Bogies (+2): 25 (18.52%) Triple Bogies (+3): 2 (1.48%) Other (+4 or more): 0 (0%) Score Par 3: 4.3 Score Par 4: 4.68 Score Par 5: 5.53 Fairways Hit: 6.09 (44.3%) Greens in Reg: 3.82 (21.21%) Up & Downs: 2.27 (12.63%) Putts: 22.73 Penalties: 1.09 I am uncertain regarding the fairways hit, GIR's, and up and down's being accurate - I think it's also recording my fairways for 9 hole rounds, driving down my total average (eh?). I think it's closer to 8-9 fairways (60%), 5-6 greens (30%), and 3 up and down's (15%). And I definitely know it's averaging in my 9 hole rounds when I've 22.73 putts per round. It's closer to 35 for 18 holes. With that said and done, where do you guys think I ought to work on improving my game? I would only like to gain other individuals's opinions. So far I've approach shots, hitting GIR's, chipping it closer and one-putting when I miss. So what other thing? Read more on this topic Other Golf Related Topics
