Hooking/pulling

The majority of the times I hit a draw....the majority of the times it is more of a draw than I desire. Actually, I would really like it if I only hit it straight. However I have come to accept that each shot will definitely move right to left.

However, sometimes I downright hook it or pull it OB. For example yesterday, playing with no woods...teeing off with 4 iron. Each shot had been good that day w/ the 4-iron...slight draw right down the pipe. Came to the par 5...WIDE open fairway...and then bam...an entire pull-hook out of bounds.

I'm able to feel at impact my hands turning over. I only do not understand the way to correct it. Last month during the free club fitting, the Pro at the club gave me a little tip as to why i am pulling/hooking shots. After looking at where I was hitting the club on the bottom, he said that the club was leading my hands. Which I know is not correct, i have read editorials and watched videos about it. He said it is causing my hands to flip the club during impact. He said to practice swinging a club into the back of a couch or something and attempting to make my hands hit first.

I have tried this and tried it on the range. I usually finish up shanking it though. I am attempting to concentrate on shifting weight to the left, head staying behind the ball....however my hands being in front of the club. So I feel truly awkward out there with my head back...however my arms all extended out making an effort to get them in front of the club at impact. Therefore I usually embarass myself amongst craziest of shots.

Any ideas on the way I'm able to stop this CONSTANT excessive drawing/hooking?

Potential Cures For Your Snap Hook

I had gone through a period this year where the just shot I could muster was a snap hook. It was only plain ugly. I tried various different techniques and could not seem to locate anything to work out. Once in a while, I could muster a nice draw however those were far and few in between. Fortunately, It allowed me to gain a number of instruction (Thanks, Erik!) and I had the belief that I would share a number of possible solutions in case you suffer from this dreaded disease as I did.

First the bad:
  • Grip - My left hand was ok however my right hand was a mess. I had been gripping the club closer to my palm and there were times you may well actually see my fingernails pointing up at me prior to starting my backswing. The clubface was closed prior to I even began my backswing.
  • Alignment - My shoulders and feet were pointed right of the target. Not only a little either. If you were to stand behind me you would most likely wonder only what the heck I was aiming at.
  • Takeaway - Amongst poor grip and aligning right, I had no option however to pull the club way inside on my backswing. If you stood behind me and looked down the target line, once I reached the peak of my swing (which was way too long), the club would be pointing right of the target by at least 30 or more degrees. Toss in a lateral shift rather than rotating and it was a disaster waiting to happen.

The fix list:
  • Grip - My right hand immediately holds the club more in the fingers and I hold the club a bit more lightly.
  • Alignment - I immediately align myself on target or only a bit open. Have somebody hold a club across your shoulders or thighs (or do it yourself). You would be amazed at what originally looked great was way off.
  • Take-away - I immediately push the club away with my left shoulder. It first felt like I was going to hit the largest slice ever after pulling the club inside over the previous few years however after three rounds, it feels rather natural. A baby fade was born.
  • Backswing - My swing is a lot lot more compact as I just go to the point where my left shoulder hits my chin and that is as far back as I go. Once my left shoulder hits my chin, the downswing starts naturally.

I am still in the trusting phase as this was a radical departure of how I played golf however I'm able to immediately tell when I do hit an awful shot why it happened as my swing is a lot lot more simplified. It's required an overhaul of my pre-shot routine as well by creating me more target specific and being quicker rather than standing over the ball and thinking about it. The just swing thought I've is to push my left shoulder away and stop when it hits my chin. That is it. Only trust it and go.

If you've the dreaded snap hook like I did, hopefully the fixes above is guaranteed to assist you out. They did wonders for me.

Hook shots with Ping G5 Driver

I read on a lot Golf magazines that when making use of a 460cc driver you need to truly position the ball in the middle of your left foot and place the ball higher than club face.

However, after following this instruction, my shot hooks and flew left miserably. My Ping G5 driver's club face is "closed" when I position the ball in the middle of my left foot.

Any suggestion?
