![]() Golf the Mental GameWhat's the Worst and#8220;Lie” in Golf?Let us begin with several myth busters, shall we. Myths - 1) If you've an ideal golf swing you will have an ideal game. 2) You are able to purchase an improved game 3) Technology has lowered golfers scores The majority of each golfer subscribes to these beliefs in one way or another. The complete golf instruction, teaching aid, and golf club creating market bear this out. Golf magazines, tv shows, and article after article offer techniques, fixes, cures and virtually each imaginable teaching aid conceivable to craft the ideal swing. All amongst pretense of helping you play better golf. Well has it worked? Let's have a peek... In 1978 75% of all golfers never broke 90 - so barely 25% ever shot in the 80's. In 2004, a complete 26 years later, after the advent of 460CC drivers with 45" multi-kick point shafts, cavity back irons, balls that prevent hooks and slices, and world class instruction from the smartest minds in the buz, that number has been increased by a wopping 3%! Immediately a complete 28% of all golfers have broken 90. However hey, let's cut the industry a number of slack, there is just been 90+ billion spent on golf equipment over that time! That does not include lessons or teaching aids! All that technology and collective wisdom and this is how far we have come...impressive, huh. Seriously, any other business that produced numbers like these for their clients would be out of business. However the golfing public has an insatiable appetite that an ever growing horde of manufacturers and marketers are more than prepared to feed. Ok, would you like to pay me immediately or later for the moral booster? What? This does not get you pumped about your prospects of dropping your handicap by 10 strokes by buying the following teaching aid? You mean to tell me you aren't going to carry out that $2,500 re-shafting, ball changing, loft angle adjusting, launch angle increasing, club-fitting session you had booked for following Saturday? Hmmm, was it something I said? As golfers we're bombarded with instruction techniques, teaching options, and product offerings that will have your head spinning quicker than Paris Hilton after swizzeling a half dozen Crantini's. Where's the moral you ask? So where's the moral of this myth busting story? Do we all only provide up attempting to improve? Definitely not. We all must fulfill that important human craving of getting better at what we love. Yet where we place our attention to accomplish this goal is what has to adjust. Our core beliefs about what causes improvement ought to be based on reality, not myths. They ought to empower us, not encourage wishful thinking and needlessly empty our wallets. "So if it is not gear that makes us better maybe it's lessons," did I hear you say? Certainly lessons are an asset and obviously accelerate your skill development yet they are not definitely important either. Ask Lee Trevino, Jim Furyk, Chris Dimarco and countless others who're self taught. And I think we can all agree that there is not much "pretty" about any of their swings. Do you believe any of them were intent on crafting the ideal swing? Yet if we look at things from a different perspective maybe they do have perfect swings. Why? For the reason that they work! Golf ain't a beauty contest. In the final analysis there's just one area that promotes the fastest and the majority of lasting change in any golfers game. And what is interesting about it's here's the just area that does not cost a penny to use, yet nearly no-one uses it. That area is the often quoted 6 inches between your ears! Your mind. The mental game. Making use of your mind in a strategic, methodical and focused way is the surest technique of lowering your scores. Period. If you'd like to run out and spend $500 on a new driver and another $1000 or more on irons to make you play better, feel free. You could well be that one in a million that changes the statistics. I realize we will all purchase nice gear once in a while however we cannot purchase it with a belief that this'll seriously lower our scores. Needless to say, this article will not be sponsored by Taylor Made or Nike any moment soon. I do not assist sell much golf equipment! No, my approach to lowering your handicap, improving your swing, and increasing your approval leans towards inner change prior to outer gains. True improvement just begins when we first assess where we're in relation to our goal. Then we must take an inventory of all the things that have actually produced measurable outcomes. Which means no denial! We cannot hope to move our game to the following level by hanging on to a lie, immediately can we? If you do then that is what I call a true "hanging lie". And that's the worst lie in golf. Every single one of us has the innate capability to tap our own potential and transform any part of our years, including golf. We only require the right road map and a great compass to maintain us on target. It's time to wake up and smell the napalm or the myths that cloud our brains will keep us believing we can purchase an improved game. Read more on this topic The Ideal Build For Golf[From the Golf Issue of my El Chismoso newsletter and offered here with my permission] It's depressing! I'm only not physically built for golf. Maybe I ought to take up bowling. For years, I've admired the "Hogan swing." However I'm able to never swing like Hogan, for the reason that I'm not physically built the way he was. It's not only a little thing similar to a spare tire across the waist. It's a matter of genetics. I'm barrel-chested, short-necked, and narrow-shouldered. My sternum looks like it was inherited from a pigeon. I have been doing a number of thinking regarding the genetic traits of the perfect golfer. Flat Chest. If your chest is flat and thin enough, you are able to keep your left arm straight all through the backswing, for greater consistency. Hogan was a muscular guy; however he had an incredibly thin, flat chest, like a number of other folks we can have heard of: Mike Weir, David Duval, Jim Furyk, Charles Howell, III, Phil Michelson, Tiger Woods and on and on. (Wait a minute! What about those stories about Tiger bench-pressing 300 pounds? Maybe, however you would not know it from his chest; if he has pects, they're flat pects.) Long Neck. If you're gifted with a long neck, you are able to rotate your shoulders with no moving your head way off to the right (to the point where you lose depth perception of the ball), and can tuck your left shoulder neatly under your chin. Tiger Woods has a long neck. Wide Shoulders. The wider the shoulders, the wider the swing arc, and the more leverage coming through the ball on the downswing. Guess who has wide shoulders? Freakish Flexibility. Leadbetter believes that Hogan had an capability to hyperextend his thumb. It's said that Sam Snead could bring the tip of his thumb back to touch his forearm, and could kick the peak of a doorway (or the ceiling!) flat-footed. And keep in mind that Golf Digest photo of Tiger linking his arms behind his back similar to a yoga master? I know! Maybe there's a number of hope for me. Perhaps what I need is a different swing model, a new golfing hero. Maybe Miller Barber.... Read more on this topic Cant hit a golf ball anymoreAlright, heres the deal. A week ago i had golf tryouts, and i didnt do too bad, however i created 4th spot on varsity. Immediately, a week later, a couple days ago, i only couldnt hit a golf ball anymore. I'm able to still chip, putt, and hit my woods and hybrids great, it is only my irons i can't hit. My stance and swing feel precisely no different, however i only cannot determine what im doing wrong. When i swing my iron i only hit a reduced slice, similar to a truly bad shank. When i once would gain the ability to hit the ball great, the sound of the ball coming off the clubface would be dull, however immediately when i hit it bad it is a loud press. It is doing this with all of my irons. Could i only be coming over the top immediately? And please respond as quickly as you are able to, my season starts tomorrow and i've 2 big tournaments and a match.Read more on this topic Other Golf Related Topics
