Ball Position

I recently finished a series of lessons with a pro who preaches Jack Nicklaus' sermon regarding ball position. That's: you ought to ALWAYS play the ball off your left heel (assuming you are a righty). Do not move the ball back in your stance for shorter irons, do not move it forward for your driver. In line using your left heel. Always. The single thing you change is the width of your stance, which varies by club.

(If you go to Jack's internet site, you will observe that the clips they have downloaded from "Golf My Way" has him saying precisely that.)

I have immediately seen Mr. Nicklaus mention several times in interviews that he used to grind the faces of his irons so the grooves were more shallow, with the aim to produce less spin. He wished to be definitely certain what the total length of every club was, with no needing to factor in backspin distance(s). Far be it from me to argue with logic employed by one of the best mortals to ever swing a stick. I mean, only gaze at the outcomes that technique produced for him.

On the other hand, only about everything else I read and watch on the subject advises moving the ball back incrementally in your stance as you get more lofted clubs (not to mention in troublesome lies, like divots).

I should say, while I was taking lessons, the "Jack Way" certainly produced reliable, repeatable outcomes. Not to mention the possible mental benefit of taking a variable out of the equation. On the other hand I have been practicing "pinching" the ball with it back in my stance since finishing my lessons, and locate that works well also. So immediately, most certainly, I am confused about who is advice to follow.

What do you guys do? Anybody here a strong proponent of any particular school of thought when it amounts to ball position?

Ball Position Poll

Well, it came up in another thread, and I do not know if it's been in a poll or not yet, so I had the belief that I would start one.

I play the ball in an identical position for each club (except Driver). 3-iron to SW in the middle of my stance. I locate it helps me be more consistant with my swing.

Anywho, how about you. Move ball around in stance or not? Why?

ball position on knockdown shots

wished to see how i compared to others who post here.

Here is the situation. (uncertain every one of the details matter, however I'll provide the info anyway.)

Playing in 45 degree weather into about a 2-club wind. Playing to a elevated green (170 to the hole, 155 to the front edge) from a decent lie in the fairway. I decide to hit a knockdown 5-iron and run it up.

For this shot, what is your ball position?

Flared lead foot & ball position with irons

Do you flare your lead foot at all? (meaning, is your lead foot a little "open").

If so, ever notice what it does to your ball position? For example, if I am hitting a shot iron, similar to a 9 iron, I am looking to place the ball in the middle of my stance at address. However what I perceive to become the middle of my stance, and what actually is the middle of my stance are 2 different things.

I played a round yesterday with my brother-in-law and father-in-law, both who're better golfers than I'm (one of the reasons I like playing with them) and they commented on the way I play the ball a little forward in my stance with short irons. I tend to hit my irons a little fat at times.

When I stopped to take a peek at it, and with their assist, we noticed that I was playing the ball in the middle of my toes, and with that lead foot a little flared the ball position was actually a little forward in relation to my actual stance and center of gravity. I have always flared the lead foot a little and I was not about to adjust that, so I moved the ball back about an inch or 2 so it was truly in the middle of my stance. It helped greatly for solid contact.

Only a thought that I figured I'd share.

Ball Position at address?

Is there a general rule of thumb?

I ask this for the reason that I'm having a number of difficulties when I'm close to the green, however cannot use my 6 or 8 iron to chip and run. I use my Lob wedge however I tend to hit it thin and skull it hard at times.

I honestly think if I'm able to solve this dilemma or at least minimize it by most, I'm able to shave many shots off my score, especially immediately while the greens aren't in good shape.
