![]() Ball FlightHere is something I have used for several years.Swing Path Club Face* Result ---------- ---------- ------ Closed Pull Hook Out to In Square Pull (left, no curve) Open Slice Closed Pull Hook Square Square Straight (straight, no curve) Open Push Slice Closed Hook In to Out Square Push (right, no curve) Open Push Slice * Relative to swing path Notes: 1) The ball leaves the clubface square to the clubface. The first 50 feet will present you the angle of the clubface at impact. 2) The ball then spins based on the relative position of the club face to the swing path. So, another way to look at it's simply: Club Face Result --------- ------ Closed Hook Square Straight Open Slice Combine the club face relative to your swing path and you will gain the ability to figure out what happend. If the ball began left, then cut, you made impact with a closed clubface relative to your target line however open to your swing path. If you hit a shot that starts right and draws back, you made impact with an open clubface relative to the target line (began right) however closed relative to the swing path (draw). Read more on this topic how does shaft flex affect ball flight?i understand that ball flight can be affected by things other than shaft flex, however i had the ultimate desire to know if you're slicing the ball, is it due to the shaft being too stiff or too flexible?, or if you hook is it shaft too stiff or too flexible? please assist me as i'm searching for a new driver and desire to understand whether to gain stiffer or more flexible. i've rather a fast swing, however i've a big hook on my shotsRead more on this topic The Nine Laws of ball flightHello guys,The majority of you know regarding the laws of ball flight, however I feel it can be useful to show a number of the newer players why a ball does what it does once it leaves the club. This can be useful when attempting to diagnose difficulties with ball flight on the course or while practicing on the range. The're 2 issues that effect ball flight: 1. Path of swing through impact 2. Position of club face (e.g. closed, square or open). A straight shot is developed by a square club face and a straight (down the line) swing path. A slice is attributed to an open club face and vice versa for a draw. I believe it's essential to analyze your ball flight on every shot, this can be a barometer for how you play a specific day or even for parts of a round. In the chart below you are able to view the characteristics on the way the ball 'performs' once struck. The 3 lines leaving the center shows 'path of swing' while the curvature (or lack of) determines the position of the club face. Hope this helps, Doug
Read more on this topic Diagnose my ball flightLast night with my driver , the ball would go dead straight for about 50-75 yards and then had rather the hook on it. Felt true great coming off the clubface however obviously the outcomes were not fantastic....did not get me into too much trouble actually, however obviously it's not ideal.I know this has been discussed on this board and I have seem a number of differing opinions. So would that be a great swing path with a closed clubface at impact? I do not think I was coming OTT...if anything maybe a little too inside for the reason that at times the ball began a little right of center however not much. thank you.
